What is Garad Silk?

Garad silk is a heritage handloom treasure from the heart of Bengal, meticulously woven in the Murshidabad region of West Bengal. Crafted from non-degummed mulberry silk yarn, Garad silk retains a subtle, crisp texture that speaks of tradition untouched — pure, raw, and elegant in its natural essence.

One of its defining features is the distinctive three-shuttle weaving technique used to achieve the rich, contrasting borders — a mastery akin to the Korvai technique of Kanjeevaram sarees. Traditionally, Garad sarees feature a pristine, natural white body adorned with deep red or other vibrant coloured borders and pallu, embodying grace in its most minimalist yet powerful form.

For generations, Garad silk has been the ceremonial staple for Bengali women — especially during sacred rituals, Durga Puja, and auspicious occasions. Its timeless appeal lies in its purity and the spiritual significance it holds in Bengali culture.

Comfortable across all seasons, Garad silk keeps you cool during the summer while offering an elegant drape in cooler months, making it a versatile addition to any heirloom wardrobe.

Style Tip:

Pair your Garad silk saree with a red silk blouse or a handwoven jamdani jacket for a rooted yet refined look. Add traditional gold jewellery or shankha-pola bangles to honour the saree’s cultural spirit.
